How to Use Our VAT Calculator

Using the calculator takes only a few seconds:

Enter the amount you want to calculate.
Select the VAT rate – 20%, 5%, 0% or enter a custom rate.
Choose Add VAT if your starting figure excludes VAT.
Choose Remove VAT if your starting figure already includes VAT.
View the net amount, VAT amount and gross amount instantly.

For most UK goods and services, the standard VAT rate is currently 20%. A reduced rate of 5% applies to certain goods and services, while qualifying zero-rated supplies use a 0% VAT rate.

What is VAT?

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a tax added to most goods and services sold by VAT-registered businesses in the UK.
VAT-registered businesses generally charge VAT on taxable sales and may be able to reclaim VAT paid on eligible business purchases.
The amount of VAT charged depends on the VAT rate that applies to the particular goods or services.

UK VAT Rates

The main UK VAT rates are

• 20% Standard Rate – applies to most goods and services
• 5% Reduced Rate – applies to certain qualifying goods and services
• 0% Zero Rate – applies to certain qualifying supplies

Custom VAT Rates

Not every calculation will necessarily use one of the standard preset rates.
Our VAT calculator also allows you to enter a custom VAT percentage, making it useful when you need to calculate figures using a different rate.
Simply enter the required percentage, and the calculator will work out the VAT amount, net value and gross total.
Keep in mind that the calculator works with the rate you enter. It does not determine which VAT rate should legally apply to a transaction.

Why Accurate VAT Calculations Matter

VAT errors can affect more than just one invoice. If an incorrect rate or calculation is repeated across multiple transactions, it can lead to inaccurate records and VAT returns.

Accurate VAT calculations can help you:

• Charge customers the correct amount
• Keep invoices and bookkeeping records accurate
Check VAT-inclusive and VAT-exclusive prices
• Reduce errors when preparing VAT returns
• Clearly identify the VAT element of income and expenses

A reliable VAT calculator makes the numerical side easier, but businesses still need to make sure the correct VAT treatment is being applied

VAT Registration Threshold

As your business grows, it is also important to monitor whether you need to register for VAT.

The current UK compulsory VAT registration threshold is £90,000 of VAT-taxable turnover over a rolling 12-month period.

This means the threshold is not based only on your accounting year or calendar year. You should regularly review your taxable turnover over the previous 12 months.

If your business is approaching the threshold, keeping track of your turnover can help you register at the right time and avoid unnecessary compliance issues.
